Changing to editable worked. I recall having used hidden editable fields a few years ago, but then switched to CWC and never had a problem until now.

Strange thing though - Editable field Default formula should have the same execution rules as CWC. That is, if a default formula can work 'properly' then why cant a CWC?

Oh well, this problem is solved.
